If you don’t have these health concerns, TRT is generally safe. Your provider will let you know how often you need to do this. It may take a few weeks before you start noticing differences in your body and mood once starting TRT. TRT doesn’t fix or cure the underlying cause of low testosterone. They’ll ask about your medical history and do a physical exam. For example, chemotherapy or radiation therapy can damage one of these organs.
Many providers that offer gender affirming care on an informed-consent model — like FOLX, Plume, and Planned Parenthood — have a robust library of articles designed to answer the most frequently asked questions. These are all signs that your testosterone dosage is too high. "So, fertility preservation options should be discussed with your provider." Once you find a clinician, "discuss and outline your medical history with them, including preexisting conditions, family history, allergies, and other medications you may be taking," says Golding-Granado. "If you want to get your levels higher faster and more reliably, then subcutaneous injections weekly might achieve your goal more easily." A healthcare professional can help you figure out the best option for you and advise you on the next steps.
That's why medications that lower testosterone levels (for example, leuprolide) are common treatments for men with prostate cancer. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is an option for men who have low testosterone levels due to male hypogonadism. For men who clearly have testosterone deficiency, there is no apparent increased risk of heart attack or stroke or greater chance of developing a new prostate cancer from testosterone replacement therapy. Classical male hypogonadism is when low testosterone levels are due to an underlying medical condition or damage to your testicles, pituitary gland or hypothalamus. Lower-than-normal testosterone levels typically only cause symptoms in males. Aside from medical treatment, there are lifestyle changes women can make to help lower their testosterone levels. Hall scheduled an appointment with a specialist, and in 2024 started testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)—receiving regular small doses of the hormone that’s almost synonymous with male health.
The ongoing pharmaceutical marketing blitz promises that low-T treatment can make men feel more alert, energetic, mentally sharp, and sexually functional. Within 1 to 2 years of TRT, your doctor will measure your bone density if you had osteoporosis when treatment began. At the same time, your doctor will check your red blood cell levels. If your levels are OK you'll stay on your current dose. They are inexpensive compared to other treatments.
While women have smaller amounts than men, testosterone plays an important role in regulating the menstrual cycle, maintaining bone density and muscle mass, and enhancing cognitive health, mood, sexual function, and energy. Contrary to popular perception, testosterone isn’t simply a male hormone. It's best to measure free testosterone levels in the morning.
Regular blood testing is helpful, she adds, and allows clinicians to make dosage adjustments if side effects like mild masculinization do occur. She hasn’t seen patients develop male pattern baldness, grow a beard, or start speaking in a deeper voice, for example. "Once they’re in your body, you can't alter or adjust the dose or how long you're exposed to it," Kurtzer says. That can be especially true for those receiving pellets, which typically contain higher doses than other forms of testosterone. "My boss pulled me aside and was like, ‘April, you can't talk like that to me.’" She ended up stopping treatment. Yet it’s hard to draw conclusions about women based on these findings, experts say, since dosage isn’t the same (though it’s usually lower) and women’s bodies work differently. Are you now impacting that woman's overall heart disease risk?
"We have no long-term studies—even using it for HSDD, the studies really are around two years," she says. Could it help with physical functioning, energy, and even cognitive health and mood? "Could it help with body composition and replacing that muscle? "I had no desire to get up, no libido, nothing." It took some time for her and her doctor to figure out the right testosterone dosage, but once they did, she felt like the best version of herself again. Anecdotally, many women experience a host of benefits. The best evidence-based use case for TRT for women is increasing sexual function in a safe, effective way. "It would be really nice," Kurtzer says, "if we did have an FDA-approved product for women that was dosed appropriately."
To review the latest innovations and advances in testosterone treatments including their advantages and disadvantages and to address important issues in testosterone therapy (TTh). Certain existing health conditions make TRT unsafe, like prostate cancer, breast cancer and heart failure. Certain existing health conditions make it unsafe, like prostate cancer and heart failure. Also testosterone is known to stimulate growth of prostate cancer in men diagnosed with the condition.
LH then travels to your gonads and stimulates the production and release of testosterone. Your hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which triggers your pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH). Your hypothalamus and pituitary gland control the amount of testosterone your gonads (testicles or ovaries) produce and release. Testosterone triggers the development of the male internal and external reproductive organs during fetal development. At around week seven in utero, the sex-related gene on the Y chromosome initiates the development of the testicles in male infants. "Anabolic" refers to muscle building, and "androgenic" refers to increased male sex characteristics. Natural testosterone is a steroid — an anabolic-androgenic steroid.
